Geostationary communications satellites first came into service in mid 1960s to provide direct telecommunications links across the Atlantic. These satellites offer a range of telecommunications services similar to those provided by ground-based systems, which use cable and microwave. The advantage of satellite is that it is able to reach every point within a large coverage area, unrestrained by borders, oceans, continents or rough terrain. Using satellite, broadcast and telecommunications services are extended not only to the people in cities but also those living in small isolated islands and sparsely populated rural areas. Moreover, terrestrial infrastructure is vulnerable to natural disasters while satellite links can serve as excellent backup in such situations.

Landlines usually take years to plan and install, with rough terrain and inaccessible areas compounding the problems, and sometimes rendering them economically infeasible. In comparison, ground equipment for satellite communications can be installed within a few months, offering fixed costs for any distance within the satellite footprint.

Satellite also distributes content faster than conventional on-line delivery. It offers last mile access, allowing content to be transmitted directly to users bypassing the congested terrestrial bottlenecks and multiple hops.

AsiaSat operates satellite systems that provide telecommunications and broadcast facilities to customers who need rapid, direct, efficient and cost-effective communications. High-quality services are provided by a team of experts from around the world. Each of these professionals brings to AsiaSat extensive experience in satellite payload, frequency co-ordination, network planning, satellite control and customer service. With AsiaSat's full compliance to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) regulations, customers can be assured of high reliability and integrity of service on the AsiaSat satellites.
